◆ About The Artist ◆

Truly Carmichael has been creating artful millinery pieces professionally for over 25 years. Since completing her MFA in theatre costuming in 1996, she has crafted hats and headpieces for theatres, television shows, and private fashion clients across the United States, Canada and many countries in Europe.

Truly’s millinery education began in 1992, with a full year program that included pulled felt hats, covered buckram hats, wire frames, pieced fabric hats, and more unconventional materials such as leather and rattan. The following year she studied the art of custom dyeing and worked for two years as a theatrical dyer/painter.

These skills have proven to be invaluable in the world of custom millinery. Since then, she has completed a wide variety of specialty courses in sinamay, straw braid, feather trims, ribbon cockades, Crystoform, Fosshape, and Wonderflex. Her tutors have included James Glavan, Anya Caliendo, Bridget Bailey, Candace Kling, Anne Tomlin, Svetlana Faulkner, and Jane Taylor.

In 2016 she began exploring the Japanese hand-painted silk flower making art of Somebana, which has become more of a passion than just a sideline skill. Her handpainted, hand-shaped silk flowers and leaves are featured on many of her current millinery creations.

Truly feels strongly that her hats are for all humans, regardless of race or gender identity.
She would be delighted to create something for your special occasion
