The most recognizable fashion accessory from the 1920s would very likely be the cloche hat. Deriving from the French word for bell, these close-fitting, curvaceous, small-brimmed hats with crowns that covered the ears were a dramatic departure from the wide-sweeping brims and exaggerated flat crowned hats that the previous decade had embraced.

The specific origin of the cloche is somewhat ambiguous. At least three distinct French milliners, including Coco Chanel, are said to be the absolute inventor of the cloche hat, although most sources narrow the list down to two: milliners Lucy Hamar and Caroline Reboux.

Whoever invented them in 1917, they are still in demand a century later especially for those with short cropped hairstyles or a love for the 1920s.
